Andy realised his long-standing ambition of enjoying a highly successful rugby career where he was in the Scotland squad for a period of 10 years. During this time, Andy earned 23 caps, seven as captain, led Scotland on three overseas tours and was inducted into the Scottish Rugby Hall of Fame in 2003. His greatest moment in a Scotland jersey came in 2000, when he captained Scotland to victory in the Calcutta Cup; the first time Scotland had won it in 10 years. Andy was also the first British player to lift the prestigious Heineken Cup when he captained Bath to victory in 1998. Andy is a double British & Irish Lion having toured New Zealand in 1993 and Australia in 2001. He played his club rugby for Dundee High RFC, Bath RFC and Glasgow Warriors, where his exceptional ability to lead resulted in him captaining all 3 clubs.
Since retiring from rugby in 2003, Andy has been a core member of BBC TV Sport’s rugby team covering International rugby, including the Six Nations.
His broadcasting career has clearly demonstrated that Andy is equally adept at giving insightful and expert analysis in the studio as well as a co-commentator. In 2009/10, Andy was the lead presenter of STV Rugby, a live 60 minute weekly highlights show.
In 2006, Andy joined RBS Group to lead the business development initiative in Scotland for its Private Banking business. Success in this role led Andy to be promoted to lead the exclusive Private Clients division throughout Scotland, where he built the business from a start-up position. His RBS Group career culminated in being appointed as a Director and Head of Business Development for Adam & Company.
Andy’s services have also been in regular demand on the after dinner circuit over the last 10 years. He is very comfortable delivering the key-note speech, hosting the dinner or using his persuasive style to conduct the auction, where he has raised huge amounts of money over the years for many deserving charities. Andy lives in Edinburgh and is married to Janet with two daughters, Natasha and Gabriella. When Andy has any spare time, he likes to spend it with his family or playing the odd round of golf.
