Decisions! Decisions!

David Nikolich

How can the business world break old time-wasting habits, and cut straight to decision making?

With Budget Season upon us, there will be lots of decisions made in the next couple of months about how to spend the variety of allocated budgets for the forthcoming year...

There will also be decisions made as to who gets to make those decisions and how many layers of committees are required for us to be comfortable and convinced that the right decisions are being reached and implemented.

Within large organisations, we often use that old favourable methodology of over processing or over engineering to satisfy ourselves, (and anyone else who may be interested), that all decisions have been made within a fully robust system, leaving a clear and obvious audit trail behind for total transparency.

I’m not poo-pooing this… It works and has worked for many years. However, the process can be far simpler!

Simplifying Decision Making

Early in my career, I once had to attend several meetings to ensure we had created the fullest agenda and that we had invited all the appropriate people to just one meeting for them to make decisions on shortlisting the final agenda for the top Executive meeting!

Does this sound familiar or relatable to you?

Here at ABSTRACT though, we encourage pure simplicity when it comes to judgement and decision making.

Before you freak out – I can categorically state that we still apply a robust system! A ridiculously simple system that assesses the correlation between risk and control which in turn forms the question to answer.

Once this is achieved (and it can sometimes take just a few minutes) then the decision flows naturally and indisputably.

I will admit, it takes a little time and determination to break all the age-old habits and create newfound fanatical discipline amongst ourselves and our colleagues to use this simple and unique system. However, once the operation rhythm and idiosyncratic language is established within your business, there is no going back!
