Are your L&D Solutions Missing The HD Factor?

Mark Fryer

The year of lockdown has accelerated change across the board. In the L&D industry it has pushed the focus on “digital” learning to the forefront of a lot of people’s minds.

There is an overwhelming array of apps and platforms out there offering online learning - and many of them are really impressive. Like anything out there some content is really truly amazing - and some is pretty shoddy - but even the best content won’t create the desired lasting improvements without excellent delivery.

I’ve benefited considerably during my corporate life from some great L&D programmes and when I think back there were elements critical to its success in creating behavioural change within me - great content, great facilities (platform in today’s language) and a great facilitator.

It was the latter that made the most difference to me and we see this is in our course feedback from delegates too! The ability of the facilitator to build a relationship with the delegate is critical. In my experience a great facilitator would have the ability to transfer the knowledge, challenge me to do something different, support me when I was struggling, laugh with me (cause “you don’t always have to be serious to fix serious problems” - thanks to GOOGLE for that one), advise me, encourage me, correct me, steer me, empathise with me, sympathise with me and celebrate with me. Online courses are great to reinforce a message and impart information, but you need real human interaction, empathy and charisma to drive really beneficial, long-lasting change.

At ABSTRACT, like many of you reading this, we have worked harder since March. Some of us have even forgotten to take time off, as the boundaries between office and home become blurred. We have found it incredibly rewarding to accelerate our virtual delivery and the delegate feedback confirms that we’ve done a really good job to retain the personality and artistry of our delivery in a virtual context.

This artistry, character and flair is fundamental to all of us at ABSTRACT – it’s what sets us apart and enables us to deliver such staggering results for our clients. No machine can replace that, and whilst online learning is a handy tool, it’s not and never will be a full solution to effect business transformation through behavioural change.

Businesses that choose digital (DFactor) over human (HFactor) will merely serve to survive and those that combine H & D factor will thrive. The future is HD. We will continue to develop and upskill the leaders of today and tomorrow - by being us – people helping people to be the best they can be. We can do it over a video session or in a classroom setting but, with ABSTRACT, you’ll always have a human – filled with knowledge, character and flair – to ensure our delegates can really change their lives and the workplace for the better.
