Self Management and Care in the Workplace

Andy Nicol

We asked Andy Nicol, our CEO, former player and Captain of the Scotland International Rugby Team and BBC Sport Pundit, to share his thoughts on Health and Wellbeing and why they are important?

Self Management and Care in the Workplace

“How is your Health and Wellbeing? Everyone would answer this question differently because we are all different. Some would focus on the health part; others on the wellbeing part. Some would combine them together and give a holistic answer. It is very situational. If you are dealing with a medical issue, whether it is large or small, you are likely to focus on the health part but if everything is fine with your health-wise, then you will focus on the wellbeing for your answer. Let me focus on wellbeing for a moment. Wellbeing is not just one thing. We may talk about wellbeing in the singular and it sounds like it is just one thing that you need to address. The reality is that wellbeing is made up of many different elements and you need to ensure that you are looking at all these elements, not just the obvious ones. At ABSTRACT, we make the complex simple. We take complicated subjects like wellbeing and we break it down in to its component parts; thus making it easier to understand which part of wellbeing that you need to address. So many people focus on the physical element because it is right there in front of your eyes but what about the environmental or social element to wellbeing? They are right in front of your eyes as well but sometimes we choose not to look there. By looking at Wellbeing in this way, it will allow you to be much more in control of the situation with a clear understanding of what you need to do to improve your own individual and unique sense of wellbeing”.
