Lionesses Relatability
David Nikolich
Like many, I was captivated by the quality of football played throughout the brilliant women’s Euros tournament… Don’t switch off, I’m not going to trot out everything that’s already been well said!
I couldn’t help compare key moments in every match though to what I have previously experienced watching the men's game for countless years.
The Managers
Most talked openly about winning the tournament without fear of retribution should they not win. All seemed to embrace the opportunity to chat with the interviewer and explain their strategic approach.
The Players
Many could not contain their joy with huge smiles as they walked out to cheering crowds. In general, the spirit in which they conducted themselves on and off the the pitch was commendable.
The Officials
They communicated really well with each other and connected with players without too much fuss and delivered with the utmost professionalism.
The Fans
Genuine excitement exuded from all parts of every stadium amidst a warm and family friendly atmosphere. Footie fans at their best, staying on for the post match karaoke.
The Pundits
Superb, full BBC coverage where Gabby gave Ian and Alex every opportunity to highlight the inequity between women and men's football, while offering simple solutions to the FA and beyond.
It was so easy to relate to the lionesses. Whether they were attacking and defending vehemently on the pitch or singing and dancing their hearts out off the pitch, this is how I want my footballing sports stars to behave. Men, you have been upstaged!
