Women boardroom roles make dramatic jump in five years

Nick Goddard

The fifth and final Hampton-Alexander Review Report published on the 24th of February shows that women now make up more than a third of top 350 UK Company boards, thanks to a dramatic shift in representation at the highest levels of UK business.

All male FTSE boards are now extinct as the number of women has risen by 50% in five years, although those in the very highest leadership positions remain scarce with eight current CEOs of FTSE 100 companies and the report found that "significant progress" still needs to be made in leadership roles.

The report says, "Moving forward, all businesses should be pushing themselves to move beyond tokenism, and ensure even more women are getting into the highest ranks".

Denise Wilson OBE, Chief Executive, Hampton-Alexander Review, explains: “Never in the history of women in the British workplace has there been a stronger supply of skilled, capable women, ambitious for themselves, and ambitious for their organisations. It is now for business to fully-utilise a talent pool filled to overflowing with educated, experienced women, to their own benefit and that of the UK economy”.

We couldn't agree more!

At ABSTRACT we have been working intensely over this period with companies to successfully improve the number of women in senior leadership positions through ACCELERATE and AMBITION, our award-winning Career Management Development Programmes. One of the primary objectives of these programmes is to give talented people the skills and tools they need, so they may progress as far as they choose - right up to the boardroom if desired.

We are delighted to see this progress but believe it will only be sustained and improved further if companies continue to focus on investing in their middle to senior tier people, building a diverse pipeline of future leaders.
